Why Does Vaping Burn My Throat? Here’s What You Need to Know

Why Does Vaping Burn My Throat?
Why does vaping burn my throat? If you’ve been experiencing a sore or scratchy throat after using your vape then you might well be asking yourself this question!

Every once in a while we all take a hit on our vape and wish we hadn’t! Whether it’s a dreaded dry hit or the liquid you’re vaping is simply too strong, most of us experience a slight burning sensation from time to time.

But what if your throat burns every time you use your device? This could suggest something’s wrong, so if you’re getting a burning sensation every time you vape then you might well be wondering, why does vaping burn my throat?

If your vape is causing continual discomfort then it’s probably nothing to worry about, although it’s still important you get to the bottom of the issue. So, to help get you on the path to vaping those smooth, tasty clouds as soon as possible, here are the most common reasons for a vape burning your throat and how you can fix it.

Using the Wrong Type of Liquid
Although the ingredients in e-liquid are certified as safe and most users experience no side effects whatsoever, some of them can cause slight irritation in a small number of people.

Propylene Glycol (PG) in particular has the potential to give some users a sore throat. The reason for this is some people may be mildly allergic to PG, although this won’t cause any severe reactions.

If you’re using a product that has a high PG content then try switching to an e-juice with more vegetable glycerin (VG), which is notably smoother and less likely to cause irritation.

Strength of Liquid is Too High
When we vape we experience what’s known as a “throat hit” which is basically the feeling you get in your throat when you inhale. The severity of the throat hit depends on the strength of your liquid – the stronger the liquid the more intense the throat hit.

If you’re vaping a high-strength e-liquid which gives you a pretty heavy throat hit, over time this can start to take its toll. Try reducing the strength of your liquid and see if it helps.

Alternatively, if you’ve recently quit smoking or you simply enjoy vaping higher strength liquids then you might be reluctant to opt for a weaker vape juice. In this case, switching to nic salts could really help.

Nic salts contain a different type of nicotine which is naturally smoother, so switching to one of these means you’ll still be able to vape a high-strength liquid but without the same throat hit as a standard e-juice.

Vape Juice Too Weak
Yep, you read that right! Along with vape liquid being too strong, you could also experience a sore throat if your e-juice is too weak.

That’s because vaping an e-liquid with a lower strength than you’re used to can cause nicotine withdrawal and one of the side-effects is a sore throat.

If you’ve recently been vaping a product that contains less nicotine than your usual liquid then try upping the strength and your sore throat might start to ease up after a few days.

Propylene Glycol (PG)
Before we go any further, it’s important to remember that all ingredients in TPD-compliant e-liquid are certified as safe for human consumption.

Despite this, there are a few ingredients which can cause minor reactions in a small number of users, one of which is a sore throat.

Propylene glycol (PG), a substance found in many packaged foods and cosmetics, is one of those ingredients which has the potential to cause a sore, scratchy throat for some users.

If your e-liquid has a high PG content then it might be a good idea to try switching to one with more vegetable glycerin (VG). An e-liquid with a higher VG content will be noticeably smoother, and there’s less chance of it causing throat irritation.
