Voopoo Vmate E2 Pod Kit Review / Where Simplicity Meets Class

Today we’re reviewing another newly released vape pod kit in the Voopoo Vmate product line, their Vmate E2 pod kit. This is a significant upgrade from their earlier Vmate E device with increased battery capacity and power output, double-sided leather panels, mirror effect display with a dynamic light bar and an increased charging current.

The Vmate series of devices are ever growing with currently 9 different devices including the Vmate Max and Vmate i2 which we’ve just recently reviewed. Unfortunately we didn’t get chance to review the earlier Vmate E device so will focus on what this new Vmate E2 device has to offer.

This Vmate E2 is another beginner friendly, simple to use auto sensing power output kit that utilizes the range of Vmate pods. From our experience of using the Vmate Max and Vmate i2, these Vmate pods really do perform very well with great flavor and longevity.

As always we will give a quick overview covering the main points and features of the Vmate E2 and then jump into the main body of the review covering everything there is to know about it.

Overview of the Vmate E2 Pod Kit

The Vmate E2 is a Mouth-To-Lung (MTL) and Restricted-Direct-To-Lung (RDL) draw activated pod device with an adaptive power output operating up to 30W (pod dependent). The only adjustment on the Vmate E2 is a variable airflow control lever. There are no selective menu’s, no on/off or fire button and no wattage adjustments making this a simple to use no fuss beginner friendly vape kit.

A small 7-segment effect OLED display with an elongated color changing LED light bar that’s cleverly hidden by a mirrored flush fitting side bar monitors the battery status and provides an indication of the safety prompts. A magnetic dust cap protects dirt ingress from entering the pod mouthpiece which is color matched in the same leather hide as the Vmate E2 body.

Powered by an impressive 1500mAh capacity internal rechargeable battery, the Vmate E2 is charged via the Type-C USB charging port, specified as 5V/2.0A, on the bottom of the Vmate E2 body. Charging is pretty quick (35 minutes measured) from the supplied charging cable but unfortunately it doesn’t have pass-thru so you can’t vape while it’s being charged.

The Vmate E2 comes supplied with two Vmate refillable top fill 0.4 ohm and 0.7 ohm pods with a 2ml/3ml e-liquid capacity depending on your region. An additional 1.2 ohm Vmate pod (sold separately) is also available for use with the Vmate E2.

Its design and shape is a compact oval tube style device and measures 95mm high (including the pod and dust cap) by 33.5mm wide and 19mm deep with a hefty weight of 93.3 grams (3ml version). It’s manufactured out of Zinc Alloy and leather making it feel very solid and robust. The overall aesthetics of the Vmate E2 instantly come across as being very elegant and classy.

When you first unbox your Vmate E2 device, it comes pre-fitted with the Vmate 0.7 ohm pod and magnetic dust cap.

Before you can use your device, lift off the magnetic dust cap, take the pod out and remove the thin film protector from the base plate coil connectors and refit the pod.

Unplug the black silicone rubber e-liquid bung of the side of the Vmate pod, fill with e-liquid, refit the rubber bung and wait for 10-15 minutes before you first use the Vmate E2 to allow the e-liquid to fully saturate the coil/wicking material.

There is no on/off button, no adjustments other than selecting your airflow setting, so once you’re ready to use simply draw on the mouthpiece and enjoy your vape.

Voopoo Vmate E2 Pod Kit Design and Appearance

Vmate E2 Battery/Body

Before I start on all the geeky stuff (facts and figures) I must mention that straight out of the box the Vmate E2 looks extremely elegant and classy that far exceeds its price tag. As soon as you pick it up you can feel the quality shine through from its weight, robustness and attention to detail. It really is one of the most attractive and elegant pod kits I’ve come across.

The Voopoo Vmate E2 is constructed out of Zinc Alloy with leather front and back panels and measures 71.5mm tall (excluding the pod and magnetic dust cap), 33.5mm wide by 19mm deep and weighs in at 67.3 grams. When the Vmate (3ml) pod is attached, the height is 93.2mm and when the dust cap is fitted the overall height is 95.3mm with a combined weight of 93.3 grams.

You instantly notice when you remove the magnetic dust cap and Vmate pod how thick the Zinc Alloy casing is which explains why it feel so robust and why it’s as heavy as it is. The build quality and overall finish really is superb.

It’s a compact sized MTL and RDL style draw activated device (no fire button) with variable airflow control and capable of providing up to 30W of power. There are no wattage control adjustments as the Vmate E2 auto detects the resistance of the coil fitted in the Vmate pod being used and sets the optimum wattage for that specific pod type.

Powered by a 1500mAh capacity internal rechargeable battery, it’s recharged using the supplied charging cable via the Type-C USB charging port on the bottom of the Vmate E2, specified as 5V/2A. Charging times are pretty quick and will fully charge the Vmate E2 in approximately 35 minutes. Unlike the Vmate i2 which does have pass-thru, the Vmate E2 doesn’t have this function so you can’t charge and vape at the same time.

We received the Seashell White color for the purpose of this review which has a mirror finish gold Zinc Alloy frame with full length and width white leather hide patterned and textured inlay panels to the front and back. The same finish is also present on the matching magnetic dust cap which when fitted provides a seamless one piece case.

On the front face of the Vmate E2 towards the base of the device is the branding “VOOPOO” that’s branded into the leather hide with gold leaf that matches the color of the Zinc Alloy frame. The reverse face of the Vmate E2 has the variable airflow control slider just below the pod recess and the branding “VMATE E2” in the same gold leaf color.

When looking at the Vmate E2 you could be forgiven for thinking there is no display. If you look closer at the right hand side edge of the casing (airflow slider to the back), there is a long rectangular plate with curved ends (40mm long by 8mm wide) that is just visible and blends in with the Zinc Alloy gold finish perfectly.

It’s not until you fit a Vmate pod (or draw on the mouthpiece) will you see that this plate is actually a small OLED display with 7-segment style numbers with a 22mm by 2mm elongated multi-color RGB light bar. This will illuminate when you insert the pod, when you draw on the Vmate E2 and when it’s being charged providing the Vmate E2 battery status and safety prompts.

How they achieve this invisible finish is quite amazing and produces a stunning effect. The 7-segment display with its lightning bolt icon is quite fine and not the easiest to see but nevertheless it’s there (a nightmare to photograph). The multi-color light bar is easier to see and also responds differently for each notification prompt (see Functionality section for more detail).

I took several photos of the OLED display but it only really shows when the lights are low or the sun has gone down.

On the back of the Vmate E2 is a step-less variable airflow control lever and is fully adjustable. In the left position it will be closed (MTL draw) with 1 small hole still visible so doesn’t completely shut the airflow off. Opening the airflow by moving the slider to the right (RDL draw) selects 2 larger holes where you can tailor your draw. This lever is very restrictive so won’t move on its own.

The bottom of the Vmate E2 that includes the Type-C USB charging port is not completely flat as its outer edges are slight curved. It will stand up upright but because the surface area is quite small it isn’t that stable. Any slight knock will make the Vmate E2 topple over.

At the top of the Vmate E2 is the 12mm deep recessed oval opening for the pod to be located which can be fitted either way round. Within the pod recess are two gold plated spring loaded coil contact pins, two bar magnets, a circular black auto draw sensor in-between the contact pins and a rectangular airflow intake chamber that leads through to the airflow slider lever.

Even though there are two magnets in the pod recess, the Vmate pod is secured using a push fit latch mechanism on the Vmate pod that fits and secures into the two “U” shaped cut-outs at the top of the Vmate E2 casing.

Inside the pod recess are the “CE” logo and device identification; “VMATE E2”, “1500mAh”, “5.55Wh” and “3.7V” printed below the “U” shaped cut-outs.

The Vmate pod doesn’t sit flush with the outer surface of the Vmate E2 casing like it does on the Vmate Max and Vmate i2. It sits within the top surface leaving a lip for the magnetic dust cap to be fitted. On the top two side ends of the Vmate E2 casing are curved magnets that locate with the two magnets in the dust cap and hold it securely in place.

As we mentioned earlier, the user interface on the Vmate E2 is an OLED display and elongated multi-color RGB light bar. When illuminated the light bar is quite bright and produces a multi-color cycling effect. Because there are no menu options, this light bar cannot be turned off but does extinguish within 3 seconds after you draw on the Vmate pod mouthpiece.

The OLED display highlights the different safety prompts and the light bar will change color. We’ve covered the different light effect for these safety prompts in the Functionality section of this review:

·Overtime protection (5 seconds)
·Low battery protection (3.2V)
·Short circuit protection (<0.4 ohms)
·Over temperature protection
·Overcharge protection
·Output over-current protection

There are a total of 8 different colors available in the Vmate E2 range, these include:

·Seashell White
·Urban Camo
·Ruby Red
·Emerald Green
·Lavender Purple
·Navy Blue
·Walnut Brown
·Jet Black

The color we received to test was Seashell White. This has a bright gold mirror finish to the Zinc Alloy casing including the relief detail around the airflow slider. Do note that some of the other colors in the Vmate E2 range do have different color casings to match or compliment the colored leather hide.

Vmate Pod

Two Vmate pods (0.4 ohm and 0.7 ohm) are supplied with the Vmate E2 pod kit. We received the non-TPD version so have a 3ml e-liquid capacity whereas the TPD version is 2ml. They are top-fill so the pod doesn’t have to be removed from the Vmate E2 in order to fill. The earlier side-fill Vmate pods are compatible with this Vmate E2 device and equally these new top-fill pods are compatible with the other Vmate devices.

The Vmate top fill pods continue to use the iCOSM CODE technology which improves the overall performance of the pods. They are marketed as 3X upgrade providing rich and intense flavor, 30 days leak-proof and 90ml coil/pod longevity.

When first installing your Vmate pod, make sure you remove the thin plastic film from the base of the pod. The pod comes shipped with this protector so it can’t be accidentally fired during transport especially before e-liquid has been added.

To stop any confusion, these new Vmate pods are top-fill even though the fill port is on the side of the pod and concealed behind a black silicone rubber plug but it’s still visible and accessible when the pod is fitted. The earlier side-fill pods are not visible and have to be removed to fill.

These pods are manufactured out of lightly tinted (smoked) PCTG material and are clear enough to see your e-liquid level through the pod. The mouthpiece forms part of the overall pod and is duckbill shaped with a 12mm oval opening tapering to a 4mm circular cut out leading down to the top of the coil.

The Vmate pod dimensions are 34.5mm tall by 28.5mm wide and 15.5mm deep and the weight of the pod is 9.5 grams.

To gain access to the fill port, the silicone rubber bung has an indented arrow on it which identifies the end to open and be lifted away to gain access to the filling port. As with most of these bungs, it does help if you have finger nails to get under the flap otherwise it is a bit tricky.

When the plug is opened, the other end of the silicone rubber flap will remain attached to the pod so it won’t get lost. It can be swivelled to the side to give easier access to the filling hole. This e-liquid fill port is a reasonable size measuring 4.5mm so is big enough to accept short stubby e-liquid tip bottles.

On the underside (base) of the pod are 2 very large circular gold plated coil plates and a central air intake channel. Either side of this channel are two circular indents that accommodate the auto draw sensor in the pod recess.

The pod is secured using a combination of the magnets and the two oval ribbed finger-print moldings on the flat sides of the pod that locate in the “U” shaped cut-outs of the pod recess. Once the pod is placed in the pod recess, the magnets pull the pod in but you will need to press the pod down further and it will be held in place by these finger-print ribs. When it’s fitted, the multi-color light bar will briefly illuminate once in the color green.

Removing the pod is carried out by grasping the oval moldings and pulling away from the Vmate E2 body/battery. It’s a reasonably secure fit and does require a little pressure to remove.

Branding on the pod has “Voopoo” on one side and the “CE” markings on the other side on the lower bottom section of the pod that’s obscured when it’s fitted. The coil resistance (0.4 ohms or 0.7 ohms) is indented into the silicone rubber fill port bung above the directional arrow.

Voopoo Vmate E2 Functionality

The Voopoo Vmate E2 pod kit is as simple and straightforward to use as it gets. It doesn’t have any menu options to worry about, there are no adjustment controls other than the variable airflow control lever and no fire button, not even an on/off switch.

It’s an auto draw device so firing is activated by drawing on the pod. Quite simply all that’s required is ensuring your Vmate E2 is charged, you’ve positioned the airflow lever to the type of draw you want and the Vmate pod contains e-liquid.

When using the Vmate E2 it will automatically detect the coil resistance in the pod and set the power level (wattage) accordingly. The maximum wattage the Vmate E2 is capable of providing is up to 30W. We believe when using either of the included Vmate pods, the optimum pre-set power level the Vmate E2 uses is as follows:

The user interface (UI) displays on the Vmate E2 are a 7-segment style OLED display and a long multi-colour RGB light bar. These illuminate when the pod is inserted and cycles in every color of the rainbow when you draw on the device, when the device is being charged or indicating the different levels of protection.

A visual indication on the OLED display and the multi-colored light bar for each of the included safety features and each function are detailed below as follows:

Note: Once full charge is achieved, if the charging cable is left fitted, the displays will extinguish after 1 minute.

While some of us like flashing or cycling multi-colored lights, there are times we want to be discreet and vape in stealth mode. The light bar is quite bright so can attract attention but unfortunately there are no options to turn off the lights. The good news is the light is only visible for a couple of seconds after you’ve drawn on the pod mouthpiece.

Voopoo Vmate E2 Performance

Two Vmate pods are supplied with the Vmate E2 kit; a 0.4 ohm and 0.7 ohm Kanthal mesh top fill. They do have integrated non-replaceable coils therefor when the coil degrades the pod is disposed of and a new one fitted.

I’ve been using Vmate pods for the last 4 months in my Vmate Max and Vmate i2 devices. Within this period I’ve only had to replace 3 of the pods in that time and one was due to me drawing on the pod while the e-liquid level was too low.
Voopoo state the longevity of these pods are good for approximately 90ml of e-liquid passed through the pod before you can notice any drop-off in performance. My average e-liquid consumption when using these devices is approximately 60ml per week so the maths show these pods far exceed the 90ml limit.

Flavor wise these Vmate pods give really good results and rank amongst the best top 5 pods we’ve used. Vapor produced from them is also very good and the throat hit even from a low strength nicotine level is on point.

As always, when filling the pod for the first time, leave to stand for a good 10-15 minutes before you use it. This will ensure the e-liquid has fully soaked into the wicking material and prevent dry hit. It will also help prolong the working life of the pod. Equally do ensure you don’t let the e-liquid level in the pod run lower than the wicking ports of the coil otherwise this will destroy the coil/pod.

One point worth noting, because the Vmate E2 operates at a fixed wattage that’s close to the maximum wattage recommended for the type of pod you’re using, you can’t slowly bed the coil in at a lower wattage and build up to your sweet spot. It’s imperative you let the e-liquid fully saturate the coil before you start to vape and take a few short draws first to bed the coil in.

Throughout the time I’ve been using these pod there has been no signs of any leaks with just minimal condensation on the coil contact pins. I’ve used a combination of 70VG/30PG and 50VG/50PG ratio e-liquids through these pods with no problems of dry hits or leaking.

Vmate 0.7 Ohm Pod (pre-installed)

Voopoo specify the recommended wattage range for this pod is between 15W – 25W. Obviously this doesn’t come into play as the Vmate E2 is a fixed adaptive wattage device and auto senses the pod resistance setting the optimum wattage accordingly. We believe this optimum wattage is set to 18W.

At this optimum wattage, only a short draw is required to achieve a full flavor with dense clouds of vapor. Airflow fully open or partially closed worked best for me with a RDL/DTL draw which produced great results. Reducing the airflow restricted the draw to an airy MTL vape while closing the airflow I found tightened the draw too much.

Vmate 0.4 Ohm Pod

Voopoo specify the recommended wattage range for this pod is between 18W – 30W. Because the Vmate E2 is a fixed adaptive wattage device we believe the optimum wattage is set to 25W.

At this optimum wattage it’s quite an intense draw with great flavor and dense clouds of vapor. Airflow fully open worked best for me giving a DTL draw which produced great results. Reducing the airflow restricted the draw to an RDL vape with equally impressive results despite the vape being warmer.

Any Leaks?
Throughout my time using these pods with the Vmate E2 kit there were no e-liquid leaks or seepage. However, if you’re not using the device, or any other device for that matter, for a day or two and the pod is still connected to the device, e-liquid seepage WILL occur over time.

This is not a criticism of the Vmate pods in any way, it’s just my experience when using any pod mod.

Auto Draw
Auto draw worked faultlessly irrespective of the airflow position and the draw was smooth with minimal noise. With the airflow open a slightly stronger draw is needed to activate the Vmate E2 but you would expect this.

Voopoo Vmate E2 Battery Performance

The Voopoo Vmate E2 is powered by a rechargeable 1500mAh internal battery. Charging time is pretty quick taking approximately 35 minutes (measured) to fully charge via the on board Type-C USB port with the supplied cable when using a power source of 2A.

On average I was achieving 1.5 days vaping on a single charge when using the 0.7 ohm Vmate pod which is pretty impressive. This time reduced to 1 day when using the 0.4 ohm pod. Vape times will vary depending on your vaping style i.e. duration and frequency of your draw.

The Vmate E2 indicates the status of the remaining battery charge on the OLED display when you draw on the Vmate mouthpiece. The numerical 7-segment style digits indicate “100” when it’s fully charged and will flash “00” 10 times when discharged. The color changing light bar will also flash red 10 times.

At this point you will no longer be able to vape and will need to recharge the Vmate E2.

The intensity of the draw remains constant throughout the discharge cycle of the battery and doesn’t diminish as the battery drains.

We’ve covered the charging process and what to expect in How do I Charge the Vmate E2 section. Unfortunately the Vmate E2 doesn’t have pass-thru so you can’t vape while it’s being charged.

How do I Fill the Vmate Pod?

These new Voopoo Vmate pods are a top fill design despite being positioned on the side of the pod. In essence it’s called a top fill because the pod doesn’t have to be removed from the Vmate E2 in order to fill with e-liquid. It’s purely down to user preference whether you remove the pod or not.

The fill port is located on one side of the pod casing and is concealed behind a black silicon rubber flap. A small arrow, just below the pod resistance is indented on the rubber flap highlighting which end of the rubber stopper lifts away to gain access to the fill port.

This silicone rubber flap is attached to the pod by a small rubber pin so there’s no chance of it getting lost. It can be swivelled side-wards when you’re filling to give a little more free room. Because the fill port opening is pretty wide (4.5mm), it’ll accept those larger e-liquid/shortfill bottle tips.

Pull open the flap and insert your e-liquid bottle tip into the opening. Tilt the pod on its side to aid filling and to get the maximum amount of e-liquid into the pod. Once filled, re-insert the silicon rubber flap making sure the fill port is securely re-seated.

If you’ve removed the pod to fill, when it’s re-inserted, the Vmate E2 OLED display will illuminate and the light bar will briefly illuminate green and then extinguish.

Quick Tip: If you are filling the pod for the first time, once filled, leave to stand for approx. 10-15 minutes before you start to vape. This will help saturate the wick fully in e-liquid and help prolong the life of the coil/pod.

When and How do I Change the Vmate Pod?

The included Vmate pods have a fixed non replaceable coil, when the coil starts to degrade after a few weeks/months of use the pod will need to be discarded and a new pod fitted. Voopoo state these new pods have an increased minimum lifespan of 90ml of e-liquid passing through them. In my experience these pods far exceed this lifespan.

An indication of the coil degrading will show by either a loss of flavor and/or a lack of vapor. Continuing beyond this loss of flavor/vapor will finally result in a nasty burnt taste. Equally the coil could fail going open or short circuit. Either way, when this happens discard the pod and fit a new one.

Pull the pod away from the Vmate E2 battery/body. Unfortunately if you still have e-liquid in the pod, this will have to be discarded as well as it will have been tainted by the burnt out coil.

When fitting a new pod, follow the procedure for How do I Fill the Pod. As you insert the pod into the Vmate E2 body, the OLED display and light bar will briefly illuminate to identify the pod has made electrical contact with the Vmate E2 contact pins.

Despite the pods having a magnetic connection, do ensure to lightly press the pod fully home in the pod recess so it clicks and latches into the recess.

How do I Charge the Voopoo Vmate E2?

The Vmate E2 has an internal 1500mAh capacity battery therefore charging is carried out using the USB to Type-C charging cable (supplied in the kit). Simply connect the cable into the Type-C port on the bottom of the Vmate E2 body and the other end into a suitable USB power source. The specified charging circuit of the Vmate E2 is 5V/2.0A and will fully charge the Vmate E2 in approximately 35 minutes.

When the Vmate E2 is placed on charge, the lightning bolt next to the two numerical digits will flash and the light bar will cycle in the color green over the full length of the bar. These two digits will slowly increment as the charging time increases.

Another attempt at trying to capture the OLED display in detail. I found the only way to photograph it was in dim lighting.

90% of its charge was reached after 30 minutes. Full charge is reached when the numerical digits indicate “100”, the lightning bolt stops flashing and the light bar turns static green. If the charging cable is left in after this time, the OLED display and LED light bar will extinguish after a further 1 minute.

Do note the Vmate E2 doesn’t have pass-through so you can’t vape while it’s being charged.

I’m really pleased to see the Vmate E2 continued to indicate it was being charged throughout the entire charging cycle. The OLED display and green cycling light bar remain illuminated until the battery is fully charged and then extinguish.

I did observe while the Voopoo Vmate E2 was on charge the case did get warm to the touch. While this is normal, I strongly advise to always charge this, and any other device for that matter, on a non-flammable surface.

As with any vape device, NEVER leave it unattended whilst charging and don’t charge it overnight.

Voopoo Vmate E2 Pod Kit Price
We’ve seen the Voopoo Vmate E2 pod kit in most on-line vape stores with a price tag in the range £25 – £30. The build quality and aesthetics of the Vmate E2, coupled with its high performance from the two Vmate pods included in the kit make this a worthwhile purchase.

As a starter kit or even if you’re an experienced vaper who has multiple devices and wants another one, the Voopoo Vmate E2 is a great performing kit with its performance punching well above its simplicity and price tag.

Voopoo Vmate E2 Pod Kit Summary
I’m going to keep this brief as I’ve found myself re-writing this summary several times as I wasn’t able to capture the essence of what I felt about the Voopoo Vmate E2.

From the minute I unboxed the Vmate E2 up to the point of completing this review after nearly 3 weeks of use, I have nothing other than praise and good words to say about it. This has been one of the nicest pod kits I’ve had the pleasure of using.

It’s simple and easy to use, it performs really well but it’s the aesthetics of the Vmate E2 that blew me away. The build quality is superb, the leather hide is striking, the Zinc Alloy casing feels really robust, the magnetic dust cap looks and works really well and the concealed display is stunning. It’s the most elegant and classy device I’ve come across and I couldn’t believe it’s retailing for only £25.

I could keep enthusing about this product, however, I can only say buy one and see for yourself!

Hope you enjoyed this review on the Voopoo Vmate E2 pod kit and found it useful.
