How Long Do Vape Pods Last? (And How to Make Them Last Longer)
Want to know how long pods last? It’s simple - refillable pods last anything from 1 to 2 weeks, while prefilled pods vary from one day to five days.
But that answer really doesn’t help. Why do some refillable pods last for weeks but others burn out almost immediately? How come a prefilled pod will last you all day at work but you go through three on a night out?
To help you understand how long your pod will really last, I’ll take you through what impacts pod life, when you should change it - and how to make it last longer.
Quick guide: How long do vape pods last?

How long do refillable pods last: A more nuanced answer
Because of the many factors that influence pod life, which include the design of the coil in the pod, it’s impossible to give one answer.
Instead, you need to consider what factors might impact the life of your pod. These include:
Resistance: As a rough rule of thumb, higher resistance coils will last longer than low resistance coils. A 1.8ohm coil, used at the right power levels, should last two weeks or more while a 0.3ohm coil might only last around a week.
Power: As you increase the wattage going through the coil, you increase the stress the coil in the pod is under. In general, the higher the wattage, the shorter the lifespan of the pod.
This is a big reason why low resistance coils, which are typically used at high wattages, don’t last long.
Design: The design of the pod can also impact longevity. That’s because a well designed pod, with good airflow and a mesh or double mesh coil, is better able to spread or disperse heat.
Usage: Vapers who inhale less frequently and/or take gentler puffs will see pods lasting longer, and potentially more than 2 weeks.
Vapers who inhale more frequently and/or take more intense puffs can expect a shorter pod life.
Vape juice type: Vape juice with a high VG (e.g. with a VG:PG ratio of 70:30) is harder on pods than vape juice with a balanced VG:PG ratio such as 50:50.
Sweet vape juice, such as chocolate or toffee, can also be harder on coils, and potentially reduce coil life. However, both formulations and hardware have changed, and sweet vape juices may have less of an impact than in the past.
Fixed or replaceable coil: Fixed coil pods need regular replacing. However, a replaceable coil pod can often be used for months, as the coil inside is replaced instead of the whole pod.

How long do prefilled pods last
Prefilled pods’ lifespan depends on two things: capacity and usage.
A 2ml pod is often estimated to have 600 puffs, but that is calculated based on a one second puff. I estimate that a 2ml pod will last most users about a day - more for light users, less for heavier users.
As you would expect, the more you puff, the longer you puff and the harder you puff, the faster you will use up the vape juice.
Indeed, you may notice that if you are going out for the night you’ll get through more than you usually would!
That’s simply because you tend to vape more on social occasions, especially if you are drinking alcohol. One of the reasons for that is that nicotine seems to be more pleasurable when consumed with alcohol.
If you do go out a lot, or go away for the weekend, you might want to consider a big puff pod device. This comes with an inbuilt tank or reservoir which automatically fills the pod - which means it lasts a lot longer before you need to change the pod. For example, a pod and tank with 10ml of vape juice will typically last 2-6 days (depending on usage) before needing replacing.
Tip: If you want to maximise convenience, look for a pod with a large battery capacity to match the pod capacity.
If a pod device has 10ml of vape juice but only 600mAh of capacity, you will still have the hassle of recharging it regularly.

How do you know when to change a vape pod?
Look for the following signs:
1.Your device is not producing enough - or any - vapour.
2. The taste is diminishing or disappearing.
3. You get a burnt taste.
4. You get a gurgling sound when you inhale.
5. The draw feels tight.
6. You can see the e-liquid is low.
The most important is a burnt taste, as this can be a sign that impurities are in the vapour.
You may also notice the vape juice getting darker. This is due to oxidisation of the vape juice - it’s not something to worry about, but you may find it affects taste, and if so you may want to change the pod.

How to make vape pods last longer
With the price of pods and e-liquid about to soar thanks to the UK vape tax, it’s more important than ever to get the most out of your pod. So here’s 7 tips to extend pod life.
1.Prime your pods: When you first add vape juice to a refillable pod, allow it to sit for five minutes before inhaling for the first time.
If you’re impatient, you can speed it up a bit by taking a priming puff - inhale once or twice without pressing the fire button. (If you have an auto-draw device, do this before the device is turned on.)
Use a low resistance coil at a high wattage? Take even more care to prime your coil.
2.Adjust power level: If you find your pods aren’t lasting as long as they should, check the manufacturer's guidance to make sure you are using the right power levels for the pod or coil you are using.
Note that if your pod can take different coils, you may need to match power output to the coil. The recommended wattage level is usually written on the coil, in the instructions and/or on the manufacturer's website.
3.Use the correct vape juice type: The majority of pods are designed for use with vape juice with a VG:PG ratio of around 50:50 (you’ll find this marked on the bottle or box).
If you use these pods with a thicker vape juice, for example with a VG:PG 70:30 ratio, you’ll find the pod life will be very short. These pods are sometimes labelled as MTL or Mouth-to-Lung pods.
If you want to use thicker vape juices, it’s important to use the right pod for them. These pods typically have low resistance coils, larger ports in them to manage the thicker vape juice and are typically labelled as Direct-Lung or DL pods. Even then, the higher wattages these pods are used for mean they will not last as long as regular pods.
4.Keep vape juice topped up: Ensure the vape juice is always above the level of the coil (sometimes this is marked on the pod). This keeps the coil saturated with vape juice and helps prevent it from burning.
(Note this is why we always recommend using clear pods, as it is easier to see when the pod needs refilling.)
5.Adjust usage: As we’ve seen, puff frequency and intensity affects coil life. To make your coil last longer, try to avoid chain vaping, and try to take gentler puffs. (I know that’s not always easy!)
6.Clean contacts: On both the coil and the device you’ll see small metal strips, which are known as the connections. I don’t want to overegg this, as most of the time they work fine without any interference, but cleaning can sometimes resolve issues with pods.
7.Avoid overly sweet liquids: As discussed earlier, sweet vape juice can cause issues with pods. This used to be more of a problem in the past, as vape juice formulations have changed to address this issue, but if you are using a sweet vape juice and keep having issues with your pod it could be worth changing your flavour.

FAQs
How many times can you refill a vape pod?
Most refillable vape pods can be refilled around 3 to 10 times, depending on the type of coil inside and how you use it. Standard resistance Mouth-to-Lung pods often last longer than low-resistance Direct-Lung pods, which run at higher wattages and typically wear out faster. Sweet vape juices and heavy vaping will also reduce the number of refills you’ll get.
Why does my vape pod burn so quickly?
Pods usually burn quickly because they’re not primed properly, used at too high a wattage, chain vaped, or allowed to run too low on vape juice. Low-resistance coils are particularly prone to shorter lifespan if pushed too hard. Once the wick dries out or scorches, the burnt taste appears quickly.
Can you clean a vape pod?
You can rinse some refillable pods with warm water to remove excess residue, but this won’t fix a burnt coil. Cleaning may help if flavour has faded due to buildup, but once the cotton wick inside is damaged, the pod needs replacing. Prefilled pods are not designed to be cleaned or reused.
Do nic salts burn coils faster?
Nic salts themselves don’t usually reduce coil life. A much bigger factor is using a vape juice with a high proportion of vegetable glycerin (VG) to propylene glycol (PG) and this rarely applies to nicotine salts.
Should you change pods before they taste burnt?
Yes. It’s best to change your pod as soon as vapour drops or flavour fades, rather than waiting for a strong burnt taste. A burnt taste is a sign the wick may already be scorched. Replacing the pod earlier helps maintain flavour quality and prevents inhaling potentially harmful vapour.
How long should a 600-puff pod last?
A 600-puff (2ml) pod will typically last around one day for most users, though light users may get longer and heavy users may finish it sooner. Puff counts are based on short draws, and a better indicator of how long a pod will last is the amount of vape juice in the pod.
