Guide to Vape Displays and Their Benefits
We’re huge fans of simple vape kits that help people stop smoking and transition to a healthier choice. But if you want to tweak and change your settings to get the perfect puff, you’ll need a vape with different modes, adjustability, and a screen.
But what do all the settings, dials, numbers and icons mean? What can you normally change and configure to achieve an immaculate output? Well, we’re here to explain what you can find on your vape screen, what all the jargon means and how you can utilise vape modes and settings to up your vape game.
What does all the stuff mean on my vape screen?
If you’re new to owning a vape with a screen, it’s important to know what all the icons and jargon mean when you turn it on. All vape screens are different, but let’s take a look at the common features of all of them.
Battery Level
This is usually just a symbol that shows your battery level, but it may also be a percentage or coloured icon - a very handy tool.
Puff Count
A number that shows how many puffs you’ve taken since the last reset. This is useful to help you track your usage levels.
Ohm / Resistance Level
This shows the current resistance level of your vape coil and is typed out as ‘X’Ω, for example, 1.2Ω.
Wattage Level
Usually displayed as a number in W, it shows the battery's current power output. It can also be displayed as a symbol for low/medium/high.
Other Symbols
You may have other symbols, such as Eco, Standard, or Power Boost modes. These preset modes allow you to change the power at the click of a button. Some vapes also have a lock mode that prevents the button from being pressed accidentally, which can cause misfires and also change settings without you realising.
You might also find other settings and functions within the menus or display. For example, you might want to reset the puff count, change the interface to show the information you want to see, switch modes, or lock the screen to prevent misfiring.
Now that we know what they are let’s look at how you can use this functionality to your advantage.
How to utilise vape settings and modes to your advantage
Understanding and using the different settings on your vape kit can bring a whole host of benefits. You can control how strong your hit is, how much vape liquid you use, prolong battery life, or create maximum flavour, among other things.
This section explains what all the different settings do and why you should use them.
Wattage (Power) Adjustment
Watts are a measure of power, and the higher the wattage output, the more power is being used to heat the coils. This extra power means more vapour and more flavour, but makes your coils burn out faster.
By changing the wattage and choosing coils with different resistance levels (more on that below), you can customise and tailor your vape hit to your preference.
You can also only increase the power up to a point, as most devices have an upper limit. You should also always stay within the recommended wattage levels of your coil. Not doing so can make it burn out, giving it a foul-tasting vapour as it does.
Adjusting the wattage is different for each vape, so your manual will be able to tell you how it works for yours. However, for most devices, you have to press the vape button X number of times and then press it again to incrementally raise the power.
Ohm(Ω) Resistance Levels
The resistance level of your coil is measured in Ohms (Ω) and, together with the wattage, controls the strength, flavour and amount of vapour you get in each puff. You can’t change the resistance on the device, but it should automatically detect the resistance of your coil when you install it.
The higher the resistance, the less electricity will flow through the coil, and vice versa. A higher resistance results in a cooler and more subtle hit with much less vapour - perfect if you want to be discreet! However, if you want a warm, intense hit with clouds of thick vapour, a lower resistance is best.
Different vape liquids are designed for different resistance levels. 0.7Ω to 1.2Ω is the perfect choice for nic salts and disposable vape liquids used in most pod vapes and other beginner kits.
0.7Ω to 0.4Ω is ideal for freebase nicotine, as more power can be used to vaporise the liquid more efficiently. This is generally best used in kits with more power, preferred by experienced vapers.
Puff Count & Puff Count Clearing
Keeping track of your puff count is ideal for those who are serious about quitting smoking, as you can keep track of how much you are vaping. To begin with, it’s best to use your vape freely for a week or so and see how many puffs you’ve taken. Now that you know how much you need to satisfy your nicotine cravings, you can set daily or weekly targets to cut down over time. Eventually (hopefully!), stopping altogether.
At the same time, if you know how long your coils tend to last, you can keep track of when they need replacing and do so before they get burnt out.
Vape Power Modes
Instead of changing the wattage manually, some vapes have different power modes such as eco, standard and power boost. Essentially, these are preset modes that are super simple to use. But what are eco mode and boost mode on a vape?
Eco mode uses less power to heat the coil. This gives you a lighter, mellower vape, uses less e-liquid and means your battery will last longer between charges. Power boost mode is the opposite. You’ll get more flavour, more vapour and a more intense hit, but at a cost of more power and liquid usage, as well as reduced coil lifespan.
Now we’ve explained why these features are important, knowing how to adjust your vape is the next step. So, let's get more specific about some of our most popular brands.
