It’s True, The SMOK Nord Isn’t That Great…
The SMOK Nord line of pod vapes might be popular but that doesn’t mean they’re good. I’ve tested and run multiple models over the years, going all the way back to the OG SMOK Nord in 2018, and I’ve consistently run into the same type of problems over and over again.
Most of these “problems” come down to SMOK’s usual quality issues which include but aren’t limited to:
Inconsistent Coil Performance
The big one for me with SMOK products has always been its coils: they burn out way too fast way too often. This applies to its sub-ohm tanks and also its SMOK Nord pods and coils too.
I remember testing the SMOK Nord 4 back in the day. The device looked and felt decent enough in the hand. Now in its FOURTH generation, I figured maybe SMOK had gotten its coil tech in order. Nope. I went through a pack of coils (that’s four individual pods) inside a week.
The Blinking Light of Doom
From within the first week of using the Nord, I ran into issues with that damn blinking light. Most of the time it was related to the connection between the pod and the battery; it got gunked-up because SMOK, despite being in the business longer than most brands, still has no idea how to design a leak-proof coil.
For those that care, here’s what the blinking light notifications on the SMOK Nord mean:
4 Flashes (Short Circuit / Low Resistance): The device detects an internal short. This is almost always caused by e-liquid bridging the connection pins inside the battery chamber.
5 Flashes (No Atomizer): The battery cannot see the coil at all.
The connection issue was the most common problem I came across whilst using the Nord. Again, this is a massive quality control issue. The SMOK Nord is the only pod vape (I’ve tested maybe 80-90 since) that I have ever had this issue on multiple times.
Muted / Dull Flavor Regardless of What Juice You Run In It
There’s a range of pod options available for the SMOK Nord and I tested all of them to find the sweet spot for MTL flavor. The 1.2ohm coil was OK with its style of MTL, it was nice and tight but like all the other pod options in the Nord range, the flavor is muted and dull – basically, it’s barely there.
I’ve tested successor models like the SMOK Nord 3 and SMOK Nord 4 and while the flavor has improved dramatically, it still pales in comparison to what you get with an OXVA or Vaporesso XROS vape. It’s night and day.
After the SMOK Nord 4, I just kind of stopped bothering with SMOK products. I know they’re popular and widely used but I just cannot tolerate the near-constant QC issues you experience with them.
Gurgling & Leaking
Turns out, the SMOK Nord is properly sensitive when it comes to the viscosity of vape juice. If it’s too thick, it clogs the coils and causes gurgling. If it’s too thin, it can causing spitting. Basically, it’s a terrible coil design.
You can fix this by experimenting with different juices and coil options but, me being me, I’d have much preferred that SMOK had done this when it was developing the product.
So, yeah, the bottom line here is simple: you can do a lot better. My advice? Get the Vaporesso XROS Pro 2 – it’s been my go-to vape for the past 9+ months now and it is about as flawless as a pod vape can be.
